I wonder about those things all the time. I think it comes from the need to externalize the world and define yourself through those mediums. I don't think it's a modern thing however. Thoreau was writing about this over a hundred years ago. How moral is it to define yourself through the church, as people have done since its inception? Most people are scared shitless to even try to see inside themselves, let alone love it. That's why we need more places like this board: serious people searching for and testing themselves without pretentiousness. I would like to say that I wish the whole world could be like that, but we need the "light" to contrast. Look what happened to the Eleusinian mysteries and what's happening to most magickal and mystical traditions today...everyone wants on the wagon. Even if it's to say, "Yeah man, I know about that."
