I know what you're saying - the first couple times I painted mine I felt SO conspicuous! I almost couldn't even pull my hands out of my coat pockets in public.

Here's a tip: I usually don't paint my thumbs; that way if I'm at a store or someplace where the person looks like they might not approve, I can choose to hide my black nails by holding my hands a certain way - showing only the thumb and almost nothing of the others. I know that may sound lame but maybe it can work for you too, until you get more comfortable.
