Broken Thumb Nail

Hi,

I hope someone can help me with this. I cracked my thumb nail almost a year ago and it still hasn't healed. It is cracked at the top and then a redish mark travel from the bottom of the crack to my cuticle. Today I noticed that it looks like a piece of skin is growing between or just under the crack. I've been cutting it to keep it low b/c it gets caught on clothes or the little holes in the washing machine and pulls part of the nail back (yeah exactly..very painful). Any suggestions?
