acrylics question

I've had acrylics for about 2 months now, and although I've generally been happy with them, I've heard rumors that they're bad news. Why?

I am planning on removing mine tonight (thanks to Nessa's instructions on this board). I simply am not committed enough or rich enough to have them redone every 2 weeks as I should, and I'm about to go visit an ex in Prague, who will definately give me shit about having something so girly as long nails, ha ha. Also, the young ladies who do my nails are all of foreign extraction and clearly don't understand the meaning of the word "shorter," meaning my nails are now way too long for my happiness, and I just don't feel like dealing with them. I also hate how thick the nails are.

What I really want to know is how I can get the benefits I've experienced from my acrylics without the high cost and potential damage.

To explain: I have very poor nails which split and bend and barely grow on their own (although I've been pleased to note that they grow quite well under a thick layer of acrylic). Simple tasks like doing laundry will often split 1 or 2 of my nails from the skin where they join, which hurts a LOT. I also got a shard of aluminum embedded in my nail as a child, and that nail doesn't grow at all on one side, where the metal was embedded. All in all, I have unattractive and painful nails, which is sad because I have long, slender fingers (which are the only long, slender part of me, natch!). I got the acrylics to 1) protect my nails from breaking all the time and 2) to see how I'd look with nails. When I first got them, they were only about a 1/16 inch past my fingertips and served that purpose quite well.

I've tried keeping them painted all my life, and it's never helped one bit. I've tried silk wraps - both the kind you brush on and some fabric stuff you stick on, to no avail! I've tried every thing I can find in the drug / beauty stores, and at best my natural nails look *ok* for a few days.

Would the kind of do-it-yourself acrylic available at stores be useful for just putting over my natural nails just to protect them? I would think that a thinner layer put on like polish, then coated with color, might give me some benefit. Does anyone think this will work, or know of a specific product that would work best for this kind of application?

Thanks in advance!
