big problems

I am twenty years old and have severely bitten my nails ever since I was six years old. Which is strange, because I am not a nervous person. I have tried all sorts of bitter polishes, but I just go right through them. I try chewing gum, but that does not help at all. Can anyone gie me any suggestions besides ultra-expensive hypnotherapy? I really need to stop this.
