Gothic Nail Care Forum Re: Ridges (vertical) Posted By: Judy Brown In Response To: Ridges (vertical) (Indi)
Hi. I too started to have vertical nail early (around 19-20 years of age), and it's only gotten worse (now I'm 58).
What I've learned is that, it is basically considered by most authorities to be part of the aging process, somewhat based on hereditary prediliction, but can be worsened by exposure to chemical and water (for longer periods than normal - i.e. lots of swimming or long bathes, etc.).
As you age, the nail’s bed natural flow of oils and moisture is greatly reduced. This oil and moisture in the cement that hold the nail plate layers together and gives it flexibility. Re-hydrate the nail plate twice daily with a good quality nail and cuticale oil contained Jojoba and Vitatmin E. Jojoba has a small molecule which can penetrate the nail plate layers and open up the layers to draw the Vitamine E in after it. Wear gloves whenever working with household cleaning solutions. Remember that water is a ‘universal solvent’ and reduce exposure to water ( or wear gloves).
Keep your nails short, square shaped and slightly rounded on top. Trim brittle nails after a bath or a 15-minute hand-soak in bath oil. Then apply a moisturizer.
