You could apply several coats of a good nail hardener like Sally Hansen Hard as Nails or Triple Strong Advanced Gel Nail Foritfier. A nail strengthener with nylon fibers would be helpful in this situation, too. Keep this on the split nail at all times and apply a new coat of hardener ever two or three days. Unfortunately, as soon as your nail grows out, the split part will have to be removed in order to keep it from splitting again or splitting all the way down to the quick (ow!). When you notice enough space between the split and the free edge, carefully trim the split part off and then file the nail in one direction with the smoother side of an emery board. If you don't want to do this, you could get a silk wrap or an acrylic coating put on the nail. Those mending kits are good for minor breaks and splits too (the kind with the glue and powder you sprinkle on the wet glue and then buff smooth). Good luck!
