Keep a nail strengthener on your nails at all times! There are many brands out there and most of them work very well (two good ones are Sally Hansen's Hard As Nails and OPI's Nail Envy). What you'll need to do is apply two or three coats of strengthener, and then every other day for a week or so, apply another coat. After a week, take off the old strengthener and begin again with new coats. Nail polish will help strengthen the natural nails and make them less prone to breaking, and using the strengthener over polish will make it last longer, too. Weekly manicures are essential for healthy nails (especially if you want them to grow); the instructions on this site for a basic DIY manicure are excellent. Be sure to keep your cuticles pushed back, and to apply cuticle oil and hand cream daily to keep your hands, cuticles and nails moisturized (moisturizing also helps to prevent breaks by making the nail more flexible and less likely to break on impact). You don't need to spend a lot of money on cuticle oil, you can use olive, almond or sesame oil from the kitchen. There are many things that cause weak nails. It can be genetic, or due to certain medications; it can come from excessive exposure to water or chemicals or from just working with your hands. The strengthener method does work, but you have to really, REALLY stick with it for at least a month before you'll see any results, and after your nails grow out, proper maintenance is essential if you want to keep them!
