damaged nail bed or plate

It's getting to the point where I can't use one finger of my left hand and the thumb of my right because the nails are damaged--they are split up and down the whole way to the cuticle and the surface is uneven. They catch on everything. Putting my hand in my purse is torture because there is a large v-shaped gouge in the nail down into the flesh. I know acrylic is bad and have avoided it for a long time, but today, I gave in and had some put on so that I could use my hands for a while without ripping the nail further. I believe there must be some way to heal these nails. But I don't know what it is. No manicurist has ever given me advice that works (cut it short, sure, but no matter how short it is, it is still split and catching on things) or hope that such a nail will grow back. Yet I don't want to give up. Help?
