My long toenails

I'm a long haired rocker type guy and I always have my toe nails long. I'm very masculine looking and acting. I never cut them, but when they get long, they break off, either by banging them against hard objects when I go barefoot or wear sandals to show them off.
When I wear shoes I wear my black or white converse hightops, besides liking them, they are roomier at the toe area which doesnt cause any discomfort to my long toenails. Wearing other sneakers or shoes hurt my long toe nails.
I used to paint my toenails usually black, dark blue, royal blue or dark green when I kept my nails short. I feel wearing toenail polish with long nails is feminine and would make me look like a woman since I also have very long hair.
I'd like to now what others think about this?
Any suggestions on preventing toenail breakage while my feet are exposed. The longest they are a is usually a half inch or a little longer.
One year, several years ago from march to November I wore sandals 24/7 and grew my nails 1" maybe a little longer. I liked it and the attention I got, but I wore no polish.
In fact last year at a physical, when the doctor saw my long toenails which were about a half inch long, he insisted on cutting them and would not let me leave until he cut them. He claimed it was unhealthy and he said he couldn't let me be like that. So when I left his office they were cut down all the way down.
If other dudes have long toenails like mine, what footwear do you wear thats the best for long toenails and how do you protect your nails from breaking when exposed?
