I have found that if you use Sally Hensen Dries Instantly, 30-Second Top Coat, speed dry formula
on semi dry nail polish, it really does dry in under a minute. It also has a nice shine.

Before you paint your nails just run over them lightly with a little bit of nail polish remover, it removes any oil on your nail so that your polish adheres properly. And always paint from your pinky in to avoid smudging your gorgeous nails.

I always spray hairspray on my nails after they have completely dried. Not only does this help to protect them from chips, it also gives them a nice sheen. Incidentally, I use Rave, level 4 (as it is just what I use on my hair). Needless to say, do not put your fingers near fire after doing this.

Also, in response to the person who suggested spraying deodorant on the nails to dry them, I would advise against using deodorants that contain baby powder (such as Secret) for this purpose for obvious reasons.

I'm incapable of sitting still long enough for my nails to dry, so i only do one hand at a time. I strongly recommend this to anyone who keeps up with small children.

Also, a lesser-of-evils trick: if you have to go out the door and you only have a short period of time to get at least your base and color coats on, use the super-quick drying clear kind on top (and bottom, we are in a rush) as soon as the color coat is dry enough not to smear, but still wet enough to smudge/rip/ripple, using very gentle strokes. It *will* chip/peel more quickly than if you did it properly, but it will dry completely almost immediately. In my experience, this does not work with any clear coat except the instant stuff. I also think it would be a really bad idea to put your hands in water very soon after rushing it, but i've never tested it. It works for most "oops" situations.

It is always difficult sitting still long enough for your nails to dry completely, and it takes longer for them to dry when your hands are cold. I rub my palms together rigorously for a few minutes which makes my fingertips warmer and stops me from finding something else to do which will muck up my paint job

To fix nail polish that gets on your skin around your nails, take a Q-tip and soak the end in nail polish remover. Then carefully rut it along the skin to remove the excess polish. This can be done while your nails are still wet, which also makes it easier to take off the unwanted polish. Just be sure to position your Q-tips where you can pick them up without smudging your nails. I lay them with one end sticking out over the edge of the table. Also be loosen the cap of your polish remover bottle before you start doing your nails, again so it is easy to remove without ruining your wet nails.

I learnt this from a random guy applying his polish on the train-
If you have the problem of getting too fiddly after you apply polish and end up ruining your new coat, you can spray deodorent on your fingertips. The deodorent is cold and will freeze the polish. It actually works!

if anyone is as lazy as i am... and you get a (major)polish chip (the minor ones this doesnt work as well... but it still does) cover your nails with clear, let dry, then another coat of the nail colour... the clear smooths out the nail so you dont have to remove all the polish :)

Keep polish in the refrigerator to make it last longer. It won't get all thick and goopy if refrigerated. Also, when doing nails, start with your dominant hand first (if you are right handed--do the right hand first). This helps to avoid smudges.
