My nails are naturally strong so I don't have to worry about them chipping as much, but one thing that's absolutely necessary is to learn how to use the sides of your fingers to pick things up. Trying to pick up big, heavy objects is a nightmare unless you very carefully avoid any potential accidents. It helps me to pick large things up with my thumb and knuckles, then get a better grip later when I'm not in danger of snapping off any of my nails.

I noticed that my nail polish tends to peel off (as in, the whole nail's worth of polish just PEELS OFF, leaving nothing on my nail) when I take a shower, especially since I used extra hot water. All I know that if that starts to happen, smooth the polish back on and paint a clear coat over it ASAP.

I keep a letter opener (the long, tapered type) handy at the office and at home. I use it for many things, like opening soda cans. And a pencil erasers are great for pushing buttons on phones, even cell phones.

My mother alway put on cotton gloves before putting on pantyhose. It saved her nails and the pantyhose.

Just found this site, you've got some good tips here. I'd like to add on to the note regarding keyboards. It's a lot easier if you buy one of the keyboards with really shallow keys, and don't use the legs that can prop it up at an angle. It makes it easier to type with the pads of your fingers instead of the nails, especially if you put it so that you can lay your entire forearm on the desk in front of the keyboard. It's easier on your wrists, too!

I manage to keep my nails long (about half to three-quarters of an inch beyond the fingertip) by:
- always wearing rubber gloves with a ball of cotton wool at each fingertip when doing household chores;
- taking MSM tablets daily;
- applying a coat of OPI Nail Envy every other day for a week, then remove all polish and start again;
- daily application of hand cream and cuticle butter;
- using rubber thimbles (the type that banking clerks use to count banknotes) on my typing fingers while typing.
I've worn my nails long since I was aged about 9 or ten (I'm now 46) and admittedly I'm now very used to them, but I never take any chances - I love my nails too much!

when taking off earrings Don't use you nails, this my cause them to break or pull the earring into your ear even more. It can also weaken your nails. Instead use the pad of your thumb and the side of you index finger to pull the backs off. I also find that some screw-in earrings (toung rings, industrials, basically anything with a ball at the end) can be very hard to Handel.... and I myself love them.... so you can use the same method to put them and take them out too.

I find its best to use lotions that put a thin film over the nails, for those like me that despise nail polish. It really helps whenever I'm shaving and the razor slips, and also it makes them shiny and soft. Not to sound like a commercial but the kind that I like best is Magical Mane Nail Fortifying Creme, which was inspired by hoof treatment products.

Be wary when shaving. Several times I've accidentally caught a nail with the razor. As of this moment, I have a small chunk of nail missing from my right index finger. As improbable as it sounds, it can happen, especially when you're shaving at 6 am.
