Try to be careful when you open a can of coke, beer or whatever your favorite drink is. If your nails are over 1 cm long you should use some kind of tool to open them (such as a fork or a spoon).

Dont use your nails to open cans! Use the side of your fingers instead.

Watch out when using kitchen knives! I have chopped off the tips off my nails OH so many times while chopping veggies... Besides from it being incredibly GROSS with nails in the salad, it is unnecessary. Instead, fold your fingers in against your palm and hold the veggie down with pressure from them. Takes a while to learn, but you also minimize the risk of cutting a finger/nail/whatever. Blood and nails are two things I'd rather not have in my salad.

A general rule for me is that my nails should NEVER be without polish. Even when I don't feel like painting them, I put on 2-5 coats(yeah, I can get obsessive) of clear polish. It REALLY makes a difference. I often find myself banging my nails against walls or catching them in my boot laces -- you know, normal things that break normal nails? -- to check them and find that they're not even chipped.

Easy to forget nails when wearing rubber gloves so pop a bit of cotton wool into the finger ends of the gloves to lessen impact and protect your nails.
Also helps to stop nails from breaking thru' thinner gloves - very useful when dying hair!

This may sound excessive, but if you have very thick long hair you should wear thin plastic gloves while brushing it, especially after getting out of the shower (while your nails are soft) or if you've just applied polish. Hair can tear the corners right off of thin nails. Also wear gloves while brushing any pets that you might have, as pet hair is deadly to nails.

To light candles, first use a match to light an uncooked piece of spaghetti, then use the spaghetti to light the candle(s). This is cheap and easy and will keep your nails from getting burnt. Also in the event of the apocalypse, you can always eat the spaghetti raw. ;)
