I am currently employed as Manager for the Systems Group of a large company in mid-town Manhattan where we are responsible for the servers and various network resources. <GEEKTALK>Mostly Wintel stuff with SAN/NAS (EMC) and a bunch of neat appliances but we have been branching into Linux and Solaris as the company's needs grow.</GEEKTALK> I enjoy my job, but it can get stressful at times. Fortunately I have competent staff I can rely on and the money is good. I guess I have the usual woes with occasionally questioning the sanity of upper management and end users but whaddaya gonna do?So I guess that makes me a corporate goth so to speak... or at least I have found a comfortable nitch between my personal tastes and my professional life. I definitely get away with alot more than I would elsewhere. My office is reminiscent of the Addams Family! In fact some people visit just to see what oddities they missed last time they were bugging me.
I used to do consulting on the side, assisting small companies set up simple networks or doing web design/perl programming. Now-a-days I tend to avoid committing to such things, and when I do I pick and choose clients at my own convenience since my free time is limited enough!
Writing is a passion of mine that I have begun to share in the form of poetry, essays, and books. I hope to be able to dedicate more of my personal time to this aspect of my life since there is so much I want to write about! While I am a published author, I write for fun and not for profit which gives me the freedom to write what I want when I want to, and share it as I see fit.
A decent portion of my free time goes into maintaining my various websites and services on waningmoon.com. It's a (mostly) thankless job but a labor of love all the same. I love to build on-line communities and watch them come to life.
Recently I have begun seeking new forms of artistic expression and I am not sure where that will lead. So far book binding and sculpting have shown some promise and I'm thinking about trying wood carving soon. Hopefully I'll have some photos of my work but so far all I have to show is an example of my book design and binding.
